Ponniyin Selvan Movie Review
Ponniyin Selvan: A story told neat and clean!
Mani Ratnam’s long-time dream Ponniyin Selvan has finally hit the theatres and the periodic excites you; only with the technical finesse. Ponniyin Selvan is about the Cholas and their battles.
Karthi shoulders the film. The lovable spy character is well suited to Karthi and his brand of expressions goes in sync with the varied emotions the character goes through. Vikram plays a cameo with less than ten scenes. Jayam Ravi makes a late entry and gives a neat performance. Aishwarya Rai doesn’t make the impact the character aspires to but gracefully holds the screen. The rest of the cast including Prakash Raj, Trisha, Sarath Kumar, Parthibhan, Prabhu, Jayaram, Lal, Aiswarya Lekshmi, Shobitha, etc. were convincing in their parts.
The magnificent scale isn’t what makes Ponniyin Selvan a grand period drama; it is Rahman! A.R. Rahman goes the extra mile to create mystic elevations to plot points that we have seen many times before. A.R. Rahman makes all the good sounds for Mani Rathnam and it is repeated! Ravi Varman’s visuals are vulnerably good; they tend to fall to either side but maintain a good tone overall. Sreekar Prasad’s cuts are smooth. Being an abridged version of a gigantic work, the screenplay packs a lot of scenes in its limited time and the film creates a lot of confusion in its initial hour. It gets better as it progresses. But Mani Ratnam’s grandeur vision lacks a solid theatrical punch. Moreover, the VFX being subpar was a huge downer considering the project’s value.
The screenplay flows without boring the audience. But big-budget historical fiction with a solid star cast should be having more than that. The aspiration is real, but achievement is not to the mark!
Overall, Ponniyin Selvan is a watchable theatrical film. It doesn’t excite you but narrates a story neat and clean!

#PonniyinSelvan Review:
While watching #PS1, one has to expect a drama rather than an action grand film.#PonniyinSelvan1 is more of a period drama that works๐#ManiRatnam‘s storytelling works here๐
